There are many times we are called to have courage with God in our lives. This last year between my husband quitting his job, our miscarriages, and my husband losing his job there are many times in which I came before God and put my life before Him, trusting in His guidance and plan. We must all have courage to have faith in God. As we have courage we will be able to better find joy. Courage is essential to our lives. Below I’ve partnered with Mormon.org to share this message of courage.

The Winning Equation for Having Courage

Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities… because it is the quality which guarantees all others.”

If you want to be a positive person, you need to have courage.

If you want to be kind and loving toward others, you need to have courage.

If you want to be successful, you need to have courage.

Like Churchill said, having courage is what allows you to have all other desired human qualities.

But what does it take to have courage? Two things are required: having faith in God and having confidence in yourself.

courage with god

Having Faith with God

Being courageous doesn’t mean that you’re never afraid. Courage is acting in faith, showing your hope for something that you can’t see.

Faith is a belief in both action and power. Faith is in the way you live. You can have an act in more faith by keeping God’s commandments, making morally good decisions and talking to Him daily.

God commands us to be courageous. “Be strong and of a good courage … for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee” (Deuteronomy 31:6). When you have courage, it means you have faith and confidence in God and His plan for you.

Having Confidence in Yourself

If you have faith in God, He’s promised to make you strong in the areas you’re weak (Ether 12:27). Too often, we don’t allow ourselves to become strong because we lack the self-confidence needed to do so. But when you think about it, not having confidence in yourself means you lack faith in God. Feelings of low self-worth force you to focus only on yourself, and when you do that, you deny the power of God in your life.

There are numerous things you can do each day to boost your self-confidence, including staying away from negative people, being prepared and jotting down a thankful list. You also gain confidence in yourself as you have and show charity toward others and have righteous, positive thoughts (D&C 121:45).

Esther is the perfect example of someone who used her faith and confidence to have the courage needed to stand up for what was right, even though approaching the king, even as his queen, uninvited meant death. But she knew she needed to do it, so she did, and her courage helped save her people.

If you have full trust and faith in God, and combine that with full trust and confidence in yourself, then like Ester, you too can have the courage you need to face your daily trials.
