With this month being my anniversary month, I have a few posts lined up about strengthening marriage. And today, I have a guest post from Amberly of A Prioritized Marriage sharing some super fun date night ideas that won’t break the bank.
Hi Canary Jane friends! I’m Amberly and I’m really excited that Natashia invited me to hang out today! I blog over at A Prioritized Marriage, where I share resources, tips and inspiration to help couples make their marriage a priority throughout every stage of life. I have a degree in Family Studies and a passion for creating strong families, starting with the foundation of the family, your marriage.
There are a lot of things that couples can do to make their marriage a priority, but one of the things that I love most is regular date night! Date night is any time that you choose to intentionally set aside to do something fun together as a couple. I talk to a lot of couples who tell me it’s been weeks or months since they’ve been out on a date together. It makes me sad when I see couples not making date night happen weekly, in any way possible!

Free dates, date nights at home, kid swap with friends; there are ways to make date night happen aside from hiring a babysitter and going out and spending money on a meal and an activity. I thought I’d share a few of my favorite, creative date night ideas with you today so you can make date night happen again in your marriage!

Double feature movie – It can be hard to find one movie that the two of you agree on and want to watch together. Instead of playing paper, rock, scissors, why not make it a double feature? Each of you pick a movie you want to watch and flip a coin to determine which movie you’ll watch first. For a fun addition, blow up an air mattress or layout a blanket in the backyard and watch your movies outside under the stars.
Backward progressive dinner – If you’re having a hard time deciding where to go to eat, why not make all of your options part of your date? Pick one restaurant for drinks and appetizers, one for your main course and one for dessert. Then start with dessert and work your way backward through your meal, visiting each location that you decided on!
Make cookie skillets – We love to bake our favorite cookie dough in mini skillets and top it with a scoop of ice cream and crushed candy. You can enjoy cookie skillets all year round in the oven or on the grill. Eat your warm, gooey, delicious treat while you watch the sunset, play board games, read a book together or watch a movie!

Create a mural together – Get a long piece of paper and crayons or colored pencils and draw a large drawing together. Draw a scene from your love story, a picture of your dream house and yard, or one of your favorite activities as a couple. Once you’ve finished, hang your drawing in your home for everyone to enjoy. You could also take this date outside and use sidewalk chalk and a section of your driveway instead.
Go on a sunset hike – Research hiking trails in your area and find one with a great view of the sunset and easy to hike terrain. Bring along a snack or picnic and time your hike so you arrive at the lookout point half an hour before the sunset. Don’t forget a headlamp or flashlight to help you find your way back down the trail safely.
A few more fun ideas:
- Have a nerf gun or squirt gun war.
- Create your own pizza topping combinations and decide whose is best.
- Find a local B&B and plan an overnight date.
- Pick up a variety of flavors or brands of hot chocolate and decide which one you like best.
- Try a restaurant you’ve never been to.
Whether you have the resources to get out of the house for date night every week, or if you have to plan some date nights at home a lot of weeks, make date night happen! Your relationship will thank you for all of the intentional time and you’ll start looking forward to date night every single week.
