This Christmas season I am so grateful for the December visiting teaching message titled, “Willing to Bear One Another’s Burdens”. During this season of celebrating Christ’s life what better way to do that than serve as He did? Our family has been enjoying serving this month with the Light the World calendar from the church. As you read these thoughts and prepare to share these messages with your visiting teaching sisters ponder, “How does helping bear the burdens of others and keeping our covenants open the way for Jesus Christ to heal those in need?”

Below are some of my favorite thoughts from the message. I was talking to a friend this last week and she shared how she felt like she was failing at everything in her life. As she spoke I had the deepest impression of Gods love for her. And shared with her how God loves her so much regardless of her short comings. And that her mistakes and weakness does not diminish God’s love. These quotes share how we can lift others just how I had the opportunity to do so for my friend.

Quotes from the December visiting teaching message

“We are surrounded by those in need of our attention, our encouragement, our support, our comfort, our kindness,” said President Thomas S. Monson. “We are the Lord’s hands here upon the earth, with the mandate to serve and to lift His children. He is dependent upon each of us.”1

“We want to use the light of the gospel to see others as the Savior does—with compassion, hope, and charity,” said Jean B. Bingham, Relief Society General President. “The day will come when we will have a complete understanding of others’ hearts and will be grateful to have mercy extended to us—just as we extend charitable thoughts and words to others. …

“Our obligation and privilege is to embrace improvement in everyone as we strive to become more like our Savior.”3

As we bear one another’s burdens and keep our covenants, we are more aware of Jesus Christ’s healing power. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught: “Considering the incomprehensible cost of the Crucifixion and Atonement, I promise you He is not going to turn His back on us now. When He says to the poor in spirit, ‘Come unto me,’ He means He knows the way out and He knows the way up. He knows it because He has walked it. He knows the way because He is the way.”4

What is visiting teaching?

In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, visiting teaching is a program in the LDS or Mormon church that asks female members to visit assigned sisters or other female adult members over 18 once a month. The program is in place with the principal of service in mind and so that all members will be looked after and have their needs met. Every month there is a new spiritual message to share with your sisters. And with each of these messages, I create a free printable. Personally, I have loved the friendships I have gained from serving and visiting teaching. In the LDS church, there is also a program for the men called home teaching. If you would like to learn more about Mormons or the LDS church click here.

Styling for this post was sponsored by Oriental Trading. They provided the Christmas decor including the bottle brush trees, mule mug, and ornaments.
